Why Is My Period Late? Common Causes
A late period can be alarming, but in most cases, the cause is simple and temporary. The most common reasons include stress, changes in weight or exercise habits, hormonal fluctuations, travel, illness, and changes in birth control. Pregnancy is also a common cause if you are sexually active. According to ACOG, a period is considered late if it hasn't started within 7 days of when you expected it.
Can Stress Really Delay My Period?
Yes. Stress is the number one non-pregnancy cause of late periods. When your body is under stress, it produces elevated cortisol which directly suppresses GnRH, the hormone controlling ovulation. If ovulation is delayed, your period is delayed. Even positive stress like travel or exams can cause this. The effect is usually temporary.
When Should I Take a Pregnancy Test?
If you are sexually active and your period is more than 7 days late, a home pregnancy test is accurate from the first day of a missed period. For best results, use first-morning urine. If negative but your period still doesn't arrive, retest in a week or consult your healthcare provider.
